Job Title: Welder Job Description

This role focuses on producing high‑quality welds on structural and fuel tank components using multiple welding processes in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment. You will interpret blueprints and specifications, set up and operate welding and finishing equipment, and ensure all work meets established safety, quality, and productivity standards. The position offers hands-on fabrication work, involvement in pressure testing, and opportunities to cross-train on related tasks.

Responsibilities
  • Perform welding duties using MIG, TIG, wire welder, spot welder, and oxy/acetylene torch on a variety of components including I‑beams, frames, and fuel tanks in flat, vertical, and overhead positions.
  • Set up and lay out work using material handling equipment or hand layouts to fabricate or rework finished products according to blueprints and specifications.
  • Manually set up and operate hand-held sanders, grinders, wire wheels, and other finishing tools to clean and dress welds as required.
  • Clamp, hold, tack weld, drill, mill, tap, cut, and bolt together components to achieve required configurations and positions for complete welding processes.
  • Create quality welds that meet blueprint requirements and specification standards, inspecting all welds and performing rework as necessary.
  • Inspect products, equipment, and tools for defects or malfunctions and report any issues to supervision or management.
  • Change wire and gas on welding machines as needed and ensure all equipment is properly set up and used safely during welding operations.
  • Maintain welding equipment and machines by performing routine inspections and requesting maintenance when needed to ensure reliable operation.
  • Assist and participate in fuel tank pressure testing, including performing rework as necessary to meet performance and safety standards.
  • Meet timely production and quality expectations by organizing work efficiently and maintaining a strong focus on output and accuracy.
  • Accurately account for time and work completed through weekly timesheets and other required documentation.
  • Report and document basic material, production, quality, or safety issues to supervisors or management in a clear and timely manner.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness with a strong team‑oriented mindset, supporting coworkers and collaborating on shared goals.
  • Show willingness to cross‑train and perform other job tasks in addition to the primary welding responsibilities as business needs require.
  • Use basic hand tools confidently and correctly in support of welding, fabrication, and finishing tasks.
  • Work effectively in a fast‑paced environment, managing multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail and quality.
  • Maintain a strong orientation toward quality, safety, and continuous improvement in all aspects of work.

Essential Skills
  • 1–3 years of welding experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
  • Proficiency in MIG welding (GMAW) with the ability to produce consistent, high‑quality welds.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications for welding and fabrication work.
  • Hands-on experience with fabrication processes, including fitting and assembling components.
  • Skill in the use and care of welding equipment, finishing tools, and basic hand tools.
  • Basic mathematical skills and practical knowledge of measurement tools for layout and verification.
  • Ability to work well in a fast‑paced environment while maintaining quality and safety standards.
  • Strong orientation toward quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to multi‑task, work with minimal supervision, follow written and oral instructions, and show strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated problem‑solving skills in a production or fabrication setting.
  • High school diploma or equivalent education.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • MIG welding certification preferred.
  • TIG welding certification is a plus.
  • Vocational or prior welding education is a plus.
  • Experience with TIG welding, wire welding, spot welding, and oxy/acetylene torch operations.
  • Familiarity with welding I‑beams, frames, and fuel tanks in multiple positions.
  • Experience with fuel tank pressure testing and related rework activities.
  • Comfort using hand‑held sanders, grinders, wire wheels, and other finishing tools.
  • Knowledge of basic hand tools and their safe, effective use in fabrication work.

Work Environment

The work takes place in an industrial manufacturing facility that produces environmental and sound‑attenuating packaging for on‑site power generation and ancillary equipment, ranging from economical, skintight, factory‑style packaging to heavy‑duty units and fueling systems designed for extreme industrial environments. You will work around welding and fabrication equipment, material handling tools, and various hand‑held finishing tools. Day shift hours are typically 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Night shift hours are typically 5:00 p.m. to 3:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday, with four 10‑hour shifts and eligibility for a shift differential when permanent. The environment is fast‑paced and production‑oriented, with a strong focus on safety, quality, and teamwork.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Virginia Beach, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $35.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
